The experts at Crossroads Animal Emergency, based in Huntington Beach, discuss how to take care of your four-legged friend.

(firmenpresse) - Cats and dogs bring endless joy into our lives. They love us unconditionally, they’re always happy to see us, and they are our best friends and family member. But these little fuzzballs are much like children, always into everything, curious about their surroundings, and acting before they think. Here are a few tips to help you care for your cat or dog.

Pet Proofing Your Home

Like with children, pet proofing your home can help reduce the risk that your dog or cat will get into the wrong thing or injure themselves. A few things to help keep them out of harm’s way include:

Using childproof latches to keep those curious paws from opening cabinets
Keep wires and cords from dangling or running across open spaces
Keep things picked up off of the floors as pets like to taste everything and they could ingest something harmful or swallow a foreign object that gets stuck in their airway or digestive tract
Keep trash cans covered and keep all food and snacks in places that your pet can’t get to
Keep medications in cabinets, out of your pets’ reach

My dog is sick or my cat is sick, what do I do?

If your dog or cat appears sick in any way, call your veterinarian right away. Even something that doesn’t appear significant can be dangerous and potentially even life threatening. Like with a human, the longer you wait to find out what’s wrong and treat it, the higher the chance the situation could be much worse requiring more extensive treatment or even surgery. If it is after hours, do not wait, seek an emergency animal hospital.

My dog is lethargic or my cat is lethargic, what should I do?

If you have a lethargic dog or lethargic cat, take them to your veterinarian immediately. Lethargy can be a sign of something very serious. Your pet could have a virus or other illness that needs immediate attention. They could even have an internal injury that you are not aware of. Again, if your vet is closed, do not wait until the next day to seek treatment, take your pet to an emergency pet clinic. Waiting until the next day could cause your pet great risk of irreversible damage or even death.

If your dog or cat is sick after hours or on holidays, Crossroads Animal Emergency is here to help. Don’t hesitate to call us and come in if you think something is wrong with your pet or they are acting abnormally. We will be waiting to care for both parent and pet upon your arrival.
