According to Dr. Rosenstein, there are many non-surgical options from which cosmetic surgeons can choose. “For movement derived fine lines and wrinkles there are three major injectable products on the market today,” he said. “Botox is the one most people have heard of because it is the first and oldest. However, Dysport and Xeomin are also currently available. All three have the same active ingredient, Botulinum Toxin A, but their formulas are different. I prefer to use Dysport because in my practice the cc volume injected is half as much as the other products. To me this translates into less discomfort for the patient.”
Botulinum Toxin A affects muscle contraction, the source of most facial lines, by blocking the nerve impulses that travel between your brain and the muscles just beneath the skin. “The Dysport injections hinder excessive movement of these muscles when facial expressions are made, causing a decrease in the visibility of lines and wrinkles that form on the forehead, between the brows, and around the eyes,” said Dr. Rosenstein.
Dr. Rosenstein speaks extensively with every prospective patient. “Everything I do is about self-esteem and self-confidence, and for my patients the outcome is really psychological,” he explained. “For example, people need a heart surgeon, people don’t need a cosmetic surgeon; they want one. If a patient comes to me with a specific area of concern, I can usually help them look better – and therefore feel better about themselves.”
Dr. Rosenstein is also a firm believer in making sure the patient has a complete understanding of everything. “I don’t believe in trying to dazzle a patient with a lot of scientific jargon, a simple English explanation goes a long way toward understanding,” he said. “I tell my Dysport patients the good news is also the bad news. The good news, if you don’t like it, don’t worry, the effects go away. The bad news is, when you like it, it’s effects go away … and if you want to retain that look, you will have to repeat the injections on a regular basis.”
