PIPSC Concludes 96th Annual General Meeting With Celebration of Changes to Federal Science Policy, Debi Daviau Re-Elected President

ID: 1397687

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 11/07/15 -- Members of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) wound up two days of meetings in downtown Ottawa today with a celebration of the union''s role in promoting reinstatement of the long-form census and the unmuzzling of federal government scientists, along with a renewed call to ensure through bargaining that federal scientists are never silenced again.

"The announcement yesterday by several science-based government departments that federal scientists are once again allowed to speak freely about their research - together with the announcement Thursday that the mandatory long-form census would be reinstated - is the most welcome public policy news yet to emerge from this government," said re-elected PIPSC President Debi Daviau. "We look forward to hearing more."

"But we also realize," added Daviau, "that these changes did not come about without advocacy on the part of our members and the public to restore services Canada''s scientists provide all Canadians. We must ensure through the entrenchment of scientific integrity clauses in our collective agreements that future governments do not again silence Canadian government scientists."

The final results of weeks of voting by PIPSC members across Canada were also announced at the 2015 Annual General Meeting. Debi Daviau was re-elected as President of the Institute for a three-year term.

The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada represents some 55,000 professionals and scientists across Canada''s public sector.
