Dr. Tyson Cobb of Orthopaedic Specialists, PC Revealed a New Minimally Invasive Surgical Technique at the 2015 Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand Meeting in Milan, Italy

(firmenpresse) - DAVENPORT, IA -- (Marketwired) -- 10/13/15 -- During the week of June 17-20, Milan, Italy hosted the annual meeting of the Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand (FESSH). Dr. Tyson Cobb, an , was invited to this meeting to share his scientific experience and research in a new minimally invasive treatment option for with colleagues from around the globe who specialize in hand and upper extremity surgery.

Dr. Cobb says there is a common misbelief that and wrist pain is a normal part of aging and there is nothing that can be done to address it. However, his research has shown that new minimally invasive techniques can restore function to these arthritic joints. At the FESSH meeting in Milan, Italy, Dr. Cobb was an invited guest lecturer at the European Wrist Arthroscopy Society''s (EWAS) special session related specifically to thumb-sided wrist pain. The committee asked Dr. Cobb to present the findings of his new minimally invasive surgical approach, whereby he removes the arthritic bone through a small incision with the aid of a small video camera (called an arthroscope).

Dr. Cobb explains that his technique is cutting-edge for two reasons. He says one reason is that he performs the procedure using minimally invasive arthroscopic methods that have been shown to cut postoperative recovery time in half. The second reason, he continues, is that this technique provides for better strength and requires no sutures. Dr. Cobb indicates his study showed that treating the arthritic joint through the minimally invasive, no-sutures procedure produced good long-term outcomes with respect to postoperative pain, grip strength, hand and wrist function, and patient satisfaction. He says the patients in his study reported rapid pain relief that remained consistent over time.

As topics at these meetings can be somewhat intellectually broad, Dr. Cobb was also asked to moderate a session specifically related to minimally invasive . As a moderator, he had the opportunity to evaluate the latest research in new ultrasound guided percutaneous procedures for treatment of common hand and upper extremity problems. "Percutaneously," he explains, means that the surgery was performed directly through the skin without the use of a large open incision. Dr. Cobb says that ultrasound technology can be used during percutaneous procedures to visualize and identify anatomy beneath the skin and to help safely guide the surgical procedure. As technology and research advance, he suggests that more surgeries will transition to minimally invasive approaches to decrease recovery time and improve results.

Dr. Cobb advises patients who may be experiencing any symptoms in their hands, wrists, elbows, or shoulders to schedule an appointment with a trusted leader in the field of minimally invasive hand and upper extremity surgery, such as him.

Considered to be a pioneer in minimally invasive orthopaedic techniques, is the Director of the Hand and Upper Extremity Center at Orthopaedic Specialists, PC. A graduate of the Texas Tech School of Medicine and the University of Texas, he has received additional medical training at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Cobb is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has a Certificate of Added Qualification in Surgery of the Hand. He holds the patent on numerous medical devices, and he is an active member of several prestigious medical associations.
