Dr. Brian Straus of All-Star Orthopaedics Explains the Differences That Distinguish Orthopaedic Surgeons Specializing in Foot and Ankle Surgery and Podiatrists

(firmenpresse) - DALLAS, TX -- (Marketwired) -- 10/13/15 -- Many people believe that a podiatrist will be the best physician to see when experiencing a requiring medical attention, Brian Straus, MD explains. However, he reveals that an orthopaedic foot and ankle specialist may be a more appropriate choice in many cases. There are several notable differences between these two types of doctors, he offers, and having a better understanding of the distinctions can help patients determine the right option for their needs.

One important , Dr. Straus begins, is the educational experience. While both types of physicians are extensively trained, he says that orthopaedists specializing in foot and ankle surgery must complete four years of medical school, followed by five to six years of orthopaedic surgery training, followed by an additional year of foot and ankle surgery specialization. Podiatrists, he contrasts, complete four years of specialized training at a podiatric college; they become doctors of podiatric medicine (PDM) and not medical doctors (MD). He emphasizes that both types of physicians can treat many of the same conditions; however, podiatrists are particularly proficient at treating skin conditions, such as corns, calluses, and ingrown toenails, while orthopaedists have a thorough understanding of how the bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments work, especially with regard to the function of the whole body.

Ultimately, Dr. Straus says that the appropriate physician will be the one that makes the patient feel comfortable and confident with the treatment plan, which should be customized to suit the anatomic needs of the individual. He believes that by offering an informative resource on the similarities and differences between these analogous medical professions, people will be better informed and can select the doctor that they feel will be best for them.

Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, received his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University, and he earned his medical degree from University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Following graduation, he completed extensive training in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina, followed by a Foot & Ankle/Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Foundation for Orthopaedic, Athletic, and Reconstructive Research with Dr. Thomas O. Clanton. He is a member of several distinguished medical organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.
