Mexican Caribbean Ramps Up for Record Traffic Thanks to All Time Peso Low

On September 25th, 2015 the peso plummeted to 17.045, the lowest it''s been in over 15 years. Just as temperatures are cooling north of the border, Playa del Carmen (Playa) is planning for its busiest season on record. Matt Weatherbee, owner of North Americans Standards, a , is amazed at the influx of US travelers flocking to Mexico. "People are coming in droves, taking advantage of the 17 to 1 exchange rate. The cost of a vacation to Mexico is a fraction of what it was 10 years ago. When I moved to Playa in 2008 the rate was 12 to 1. Now it''s 17. It''s unbelievable how inexpensive Mexico has become."
Playa del Carmen resides in the center of the Riviera Maya, an 80 mile stretch of pristine coastline and turquoise waters. Beachgoers come to enjoy Playa''s year-round warm weather and hip, bohemian atmosphere. In 2007 the Guinness Book of World Records named Playa the fastest growing city in Latin America. Now in 2015 Playa is continuing on that trend. "Playa is still growing. Condos and hotels are still going up, and older buildings are being renovated. It''s great to see so much progress and improvement in a town that I love so much," comments Weatherbee.
Where will all this progress take Playa? "With the number of vacationers coming to not only enjoy the sun and sand, but also take advantage of the 17 to 1 exchange rate, things can only go up. On one side the vacation rental traffic is up and on the other inventors are pouring money and resources into the local infrastructure. Playa will keep growing which is great for Mexico as a whole," says Weatherbee.
