(firmenpresse) - A good night of sleep is a vital component of future health because it can influence other areas of people''s life, according to fresh research at the University of Copenhagen. The study was recently published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, and has taken it one step further by specifically pinpointing the cause and effect associations of the timing relationship to sleep and lifestyle.
Researchers focused on maintaining a good night''s sleep and healthy lifestyle factors and found that there is a definitive link between the two. Alice Clark, of the Department of Public Health at the University of Copenhagen summarized the results, €œThis study shows that sleep affects our ability to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and when sleep deteriorates we are more likely to make unhealthy lifestyle choices. Better knowledge of the importance of sleep, not just for biological restitution, but also for making healthy lifestyle decisions, may help people make informed decisions about prioritizing how the spend the night.€Â
The results of this study revealed that maintaining a sleeping pattern that included undisturbed sleep duration was a positive factor for smoking cessation compared to participants who did not get adequate sleep and had increased sleep disturbances. Additionally, impaired sleep can cause an elevated risk of increased alcohol consumption.
Other unhealthy lifestyle factors, such as physical inactivity in people who were physically active prior to a decrease in healthy sleep patterns €“ put them at an increased risk of obesity, a known factor for causing many adverse health conditions.
Denmark and Finland participated in the study, as researchers, including epidemiologists, analyzed 35,000 participants who qualified based on rigorous inclusion and exclusion criteria. The research was conducted in three methodical €œwaves€ over a four-year time span.
