(firmenpresse) - INDIAN HEAD, SASKATCHEWAN -- (Marketwired) -- 09/24/15 -- Healthy soils are the foundation of sustainable food production, enhanced biodiversity as well as cleaner air and water for present and future generations. What can you do to keep healthy soil a part of Canada''s agricultural landscape? Answer this question and contribute to the discussion at the Soil Conservation Council of Canada''s (SCCC) first ever Summit on Canadian Soil Health to be held Tuesday, December 1st in Calgary, Alberta in conjunction with the GrowCanada 2015 Conference.

"I urge you to join us as we dig into the state of Canada''s soils," says Paul Thoroughgood, SCCC Chair. "Healthy soils are important to all of us. They are fundamental to our legacy of sustainable food production for present and future generations."

The United Nations has designated 2015 International Year of Soils and the SCCC underscores that this is the perfect time to bring Canada''s soil issues forward.

Best-selling author, Dr. David Montgomery will provide the keynote address and will speak to his book Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations. Producer, industry, science and government panel members will lead discussions on existing and emerging challenges and solutions to soil health concerns on the agricultural landscape. SCCC will also highlight the best healthy agricultural landscape shots submitted to its current photo contest that runs until the end of October.

"Only five per cent of land in Canada is suitable for agricultural purposes. This land is under threat from soil degradation, urban sprawl, and other uses," says Thoroughgood. "It''s time to stop treating soil like dirt and become part of the solution. As producers and industry stakeholders, we all need to work together to promote management practices and production systems that will keep our agricultural landscape healthy."

The Summit on Canadian Soil Health is the place to be for anyone who wants a better understanding of how we can work together to protect and care for our soil, air and water.

Registration for the Summit is now open. Visit for more details and to register today.

The SCCC is the only national organization to concentrate on the issues of soil health and soil conservation within a broadly based landscape context. It works to build a greater understanding of the importance of soil as an essential resource to society by facilitating the exchange of information with all stakeholders.
