Canadian Staff Union members begin strike votes against CUPE
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 09/17/15 -- More than 400 members of the Canadian Staff Union, who are employed by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE, Canada''s largest union), have begun taking strike votes against their employer.
The first vote has now been completed. Members of CSU Local 1 representing staff in British Columbia have voted 96% in favour of strike action against CUPE, with 94% of the members casting ballots.
CSU President Peter Paulekat (PRON: Pall-AH-Kot) says, "Our members in B.C. are the first to send a message to this employer that their latest ''Offer of Settlement'' does not even come close to addressing our outstanding issues in this round of bargaining.
"I am very confident that other strike votes taking place across the country this week and next will send the very same message to CUPE''s National Executive Board. Members of CSU are not prepared to see our working conditions, including health and safety and accommodation in the workplace, pension indexation for retirees, and wages moving backwards at the hands of this employer," says Paulekat.
CSU will be releasing strike vote results as they are completed across the country.
