The new Business Destinations report looks at six of the cities most at risk of flooding, and the ways in which their situations and strategies differ. Venice, for example, sits only one metre above sea level, and a mammoth EUR5.4bn has been spent on the city''s flood barrier project so far to keep it from flooding. Elsewhere, Business Destinations takes a look at New Orleans, where the lessons learned as a result of Hurricane Katrina have sparked policymakers into action.
Aside from the obvious examples of Venice and New Orleans, Business Destinations takes a look also at some of the lesser mentioned victims of rising seas, such as Saint Petersburg, Hamburg and Los Angeles, which together face billions of dollars in damages if they don''t take immediate action. Of the six included in the Business Destinations sample, arguably none has made more progress than Amsterdam, and though much of the country lies below sea level already, a complex system of dykes, dams, levees and floodgates have spared it the worst of the damages.
