Design That Promotes Public Health -- an AIA|DC Workshop for Architects, Planners, and Developers

Case Studies and More From Nationally Renowned Experts

(firmenpresse) - WASHINGTON, DC -- (Marketwired) -- 08/04/15 -- Good design isn''t just a luxury -- it can actually promote public health. That''s the core idea behind a workshop that the Design+Well Being Committee of the Washington Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA|DC) will be holding at the District Architecture Center on August 25.

During the one-day interactive workshop -- entitled "Healthy Design, Healthy Building, Healthy City" -- participants will explore:

the best ways to integrate design and well-being into residential and commercial projects

how to enhance the physical and emotional well-being of the people who live, work, and play in our spaces

how to build social and financial capital in both urban and rural communities

Designing for health and well-being is on the leading edge of architectural design and community planning throughout the country, but few local projects have made that jump. Through case studies of two multi-family projects -- Eco Modern Flats (Modus Studio) in Arkansas and City Market at O Street here in DC (Shalom Baranes Associates) -- and additional design presentations, locally and nationally renowned experts will highlight design strategies, programs, and technologies that take the health and well-being of building occupants into account while paying attention to the business case that advances their viability.

"Design that enhances the physical health, social connectedness, and safety of the people who live, work, and play in our spaces not only makes good human sense, but also good business and public health sense," said Mary Fitch, Executive Director of AIA|DC.

The workshop is sponsored by the Architects Foundation of the American Institute of Architects.
