The Muskoka Conservancy Built & Cultural Heritage Awards recognizes Muskoka properties that have demonstrated an ongoing commitment to stewardship and preservation. Among other criteria, a property may be selected for the award due to its historic significance, or because it represents a unique example of a specific architectural style or type. Consideration is also given to the condition of the building and the extent to which its architectural or historic integrity has been retained if it has been changed or modified. The recipients of the 2015 awards were announced on June 6th at the Muskoka Conservancy''s Annual General Meeting, which was held at the Nipissing University Campus. The Muskoka Conservancy''s mandate is "to nurture, conserve, and protect Muskoka''s natural and built heritage for future generations."
Sherwood has enjoyed a rich and storied history as a Muskoka inn. The main lodge building as it stands today was built in 1939 by Toronto lawyer Charles (Harry) Draper who built the inn to look like an elegant New England country home with classic neo-Georgian influences. Throughout the years, Sherwood Inn has managed to retain its original style, even after a devastating fire in 2009 destroyed the lobby, lounge and dining room. Sherwood Inn''s present owner ClubLink has restored the inn to its former glory. In 2010, extensive renovations to the inn were completed, including many upgrades to reflect the amenities expected of a contemporary luxury resort, yet preserving all its historic charm.
