Partnership With US Naval Academy and Naval Historical Foundation Aimed at Developing Hands-On K-12 STEM Curriculum

(firmenpresse) - ALAMEDA, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 07/23/15 -- The USS Hornet Museum was recently awarded a $300,000 grant from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to work with the US Naval Academy (USNA) and the Naval Historical Foundation (NHF) over the next three years. The grant will create a multi-purpose K-12 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program that can be employed at any Naval museum in the United States.

The partnership and grant emerge from the Department of the Navy''s efforts to improve and promote innovative STEM education that meets the needs of U.S.A.''s future economy and national security. Through the ONR, it has sought to raise the profile of Naval museums and historic Naval ships, highlighting the unique opportunities they present as educational resources and venues for training K-12 teachers.

As Hornet Museum Board of Trustee''s Robert Fish notes, "What better place to inspire young people about STEM than on the very aircraft carrier -- a marvel of engineering in itself -- that recovered the first humans to walk on the moon?"

Since its opening in 1998, the USS Hornet Museum has engaged the minds of thousands of young people through several popular programs, including merit badge classes for Scouts and Living Ship Day events that feature notable speakers. In recent years, however, the Museum has worked actively to bring its newer educational initiatives into harmony with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

For example, the recently-debuted STEM to Stern Jr. Program allows K-12 students to explore grade level-appropriate physics and earth science concepts by relating them to the day-to-day operations of a WWII aircraft carrier. With the ONR grant and the new partnership, the Hornet will be positioned to contribute to new developments in STEM education, particularly for girls and underserved youth.

"We are thrilled to collaborate with such visionary institutions as the US Naval Academy and the Naval Historical Foundation," said Heidi Schave, the head of the USS Hornet''s Education Department. "They recognize the vital importance of training young students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and they bring a wealth of teaching experience and curriculum development into the partnership."
