Interview with Surojit Banerjee, Godrej & Boyce Mfg. Co. Ltd., Mumbai, ESSA member company since 2008

FRANKFURT/MAIN – July 2015. The Godrej Group was established in 1897. Godrej Security Solutions is part of the USD 4.5 Billion Godrej conglomerate, which made a humble beginning with locks and safe manufacturing, by its founder Mr Ardeshir Godrej. Surojit Banerjee is Associate General Manager at Godrej – “Security Solutions” and responsible for the European market.

(firmenpresse) - Mr. Banerjee, what are you working on in these days?

We are currently working on expanding our reach and improving our Global footprint with a strong focus on the European market. Apart from market expansion we are also working on several innovation projects that will help establish us as one of the leaders of the industry.

You have relied on the ECB•S certification for several years now, what is the feedback you get?

Our customers do recognize the ECB•S certification as a mark of quality and trust.
The product cycles of safes and locks are sometimes very long. Which technical trends dominate the market right now?

Security products need to continuously evolve and so do safes and locks. Smart Networking solutions for physical security systems are definitely a growing trend. It is all about making the safe smart enough to be in sync with the other lines of defense, which would imply more electronics, more intelligence being embedded in the basic product.

You “fight” against burglary and fraud? Are criminals getting ahead when it comes to technical developments?

Unfortunately, technology does not discriminate between criminals and law abiding citizens – so modern day criminals have equal access to cutting edge technology. It is therefore imperative for Security Equipment manufacturers like us to keep on evolving and keep pace with the technology to enable us to stay ahead in the race.

What would be your wishes when it comes to standardization of security products?

Standardization is most effective when it takes into account the interests of all its stakeholders and takes a pragmatic approach in harmonizing activities of an industry. So standards have to be open to evolution and changes as per the needs of the time.

Godrej is a company with a long tradition. Which fields will you focus on in the future?

In our 118 years of existence, innovation has been a driving force – our company has grown from simple lock and safe manufacturing to advanced space engineering solutions. With such a diverse portfolio, we need to be always present on the right side of cutting edge technology. As part of the Physical Security Solutions group, we are currently researching on alternate barrier technologies and embedded electronics for enhancing the security of the equipment that we manufacture.

Your main market is India, but your business is globally. What are the differences in the markets?

Every market has its own distinct character and flavour. With our experience of running a business globally, we know it is always best to adapt your products and processes to suit the local needs. Indian market is no different, internet is a powerful tool and Indian consumers too have caught up with the global trends. People look for value for money products and one needs to have a strong service infrastructure to win customers.

How hard is the competition for an Indian company to discover markets like Europe?

Europe has been a refreshing experience for us, we have been able to unsettle competition and have been successful in garnering a fair bit of the European market share. We will continue to drive growth in this market with new products, offering enhanced security and better consumer experience. With our legacy of responsible Business ethics and environment friendliness, it was never very difficult for us to make an impression also in this part of the world.

A big advantage of the European Standards is their flexibility when it comes to new methods of burglary. Right now the new tool catalogue of the EN 1143-1 is a point of discussion in the standardization committees. Are they on the right track?

Absolutely, and that is the beauty of the European standards – it shows sensitivity to the external environment and willingness to evolve.

For a security expert like you, where is your safest place?

The biggest threat in any security environment is a false perception of security – it is always good to prepare yourself for the worst.

Therefore, no matter where I am I always try to secure myself against the worst possibility and avoid being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
