Project made possible by the New Building Canada Plan

(firmenpresse) - CAPE BRETON, NOVA SCOTIA -- (Marketwired) -- 07/16/15 -- Infrastructure Canada

Federal, provincial and municipal officials gathered today to announce that the Government of Canada has identified Phase 2 of Cape Breton Regional Municipality''s Arterial Roads Rehabilitation project for funding consideration of up to $800,000 under the New Building Canada Plan in Nova Scotia.

Announcing the funding was the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport and Member of Parliament for Halton, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec. She was joined by the Honourable Geoff MacLellan, Nova Scotia Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, and Cecil Clarke, Mayor of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

This project consists of resurfacing sections of five different roads in two different communities: South Street and Commercial Street in Glace Bay; and Sydney Port Access Road, Esplanade and Kings Road in Sydney.

Arterial roads are the backbone of the community and key to sustaining commercial, commuter, emergency-response and tourist activities. Rehabilitating the roads will extend their service life by more than 12 years and support efforts to manage traffic circulation more effectively.

The New Building Canada Plan is the largest and longest federal infrastructure plan in Canada''s history.

This unprecedented commitment is providing $53 billion to support provincial, territorial and municipal infrastructure from 2014-24.

Over this ten-year period, Nova Scotia will benefit from approximately $1 billion in dedicated federal funding, including almost $426 million under the New Building Canada Fund.
