Harbor Village Comments on USA Today's Report on Drug Overdose Death Rates Increase in 26 States
(firmenpresse) - MIAMI, FL -- (Marketwired) -- 06/29/15 -- Nearly 44,000 people die from drug overdoses yearly, these numbers more than doubled from 1999 to 2013, according to USA Today on June 18th. More than half of these deaths stem from prescription pills used to treat pain and ailments. "Over 10 years, the opioid prescriptions have quadrupled, but there''s no change in the overall pain that Americans had in that same period," according to Amber Williams, executive director of Safe States Alliance, an organization of experts who work on nationwide injury and violence prevention, who is quoted by USA Today. is a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center concerned with the increasing death rates in 26 states.
The report from Trust America''s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, released Wednesday, ranks states on their actions to curb the most common cases of injury related deaths such as drug abuse. An associate from Harbor Village Detox comments, "Officials must invest more time into helping addicts and dealers get off of the streets to reduce drug related injuries and overdose deaths. The stigma of addiction and treatment tend to prevent those with substance use disorders from getting the treatment they need. Overdose death rates would be allayed with the simple implementation of awareness campaigns and more community resources for opiate reversal medications like Narcan."
According to USA Today, the highest number of drug related deaths are in Kentucky, West Virginia, and Nevada; the good news is that those numbers have fallen in Washington, North Dakota, Maine, Arkansas, Florida and Alabama. The lowest death rates occurred in North Dakota with only 2.6 per 100,000 people in a year, according to USA Today.
