New York City Plastic Surgeons Reveal What to Expect for Breast Augmentation Recovery
Daniel Y. Maman, MD and Stafford R. Broumand, MD of 740 Aesthetics Highlight the Recovery and Downtime Patients Can Generally Anticipate After Breast Augmentation
(firmenpresse) - NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwired) -- 06/25/15 -- As one of most popular, time-tested cosmetic surgeries available today, can often be an excellent option for women interested in enhancing the size, shape, and curvature their breasts, states Dr. Daniel Y. Maman, a board certified plastic surgeon in Manhattan. Depending on one''s unique needs and desires, he continues, this procedure can be performed using either or fat transfer, the latter of which is commonly referred to as . When performed by a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon, he adds, breast augmentation can add volume and definition to the breasts with beautiful, exceptionally natural-looking results.
When considering breast augmentation, Dr. Maman and his colleague, Dr. Stafford R. Broumand, note that prospective patients often inquire about what they may be able to expect following their procedure. While the recovery process will be different for every person, the New York City plastic surgeons explain that most individuals experience some initial swelling, bruising, and numbness in the breasts and nipples, though these symptoms should gradually diminish over the first few postsurgical weeks. For patients who received fat transfer to the breasts, they add that temporary bruising and/or swelling may also manifest in the donor region from where fat obtained via liposuction, but these side effects should subside over time as well.
Regarding any potential discomfort after breast augmentation, Dr. Broumand notes that advancements in pain medication have significantly improved what patients at can expect to experience. "Before, recovery from breast augmentation could''ve been painful; there could''ve been substantial downtime trying to recuperate from placing implants under the muscle. What we do now is administer ®, which is a long-acting numbing medicine that lasts three days. It''s not a narcotic. We administer EXPAREL® at the time of surgery, and by the time the medicine wears off, our patients have generally adjusted to their new breast volume. It really helps create a seamless transition from the surgery to getting back to normal activity."
After about seven to ten days, Dr. Maman states that most patients can generally resume their normal daily routines, including school and/or non-strenuous jobs. He adds that light aerobic activity is typically allowed at this time, though any heavy lifting, vigorous exercise, and particular workouts that target the upper body should be avoided for several weeks to ensure proper healing.
Ultimately, Dr. Broumand reiterates that the experience following breast augmentation will vary for every patient, but he and Dr. Maman have found that their surgical technique combined with the use of EXPAREL® has dramatically improved the recovery process. "After their surgery, patients often come in and say, ''This is easier than I ever imagined, and I don''t know why I waited so long.''"
