(firmenpresse) - FREDERICKSBURG, VA -- (Marketwired) -- 06/24/15 -- Recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that as many as 91 percent of Americans have, or have had cavities at some point in their lives.
"Despite all the advances in our ability to prevent, detect and treat dental disease, too many Americans -- for a variety of reasons -- are not enjoying the best possible oral health," said ADA President Dr. Maxine Feinberg.
Cavities are caused by tooth decay, and tooth decay is the direct result of carbohydrate-rich foods left on the teeth. Bacteria that live in the mouth digest these foods, turning them into acids. The bacteria, acid, food debris, and saliva combine to form plaque, which clings to the teeth, which dissolves the enamel surface of the teeth.
What can be done about cavities? The answer is simple.
"We know that prevention works. While it is critical to treat disease that has already occurred, the public health community needs to increase its focus on proven means of preventing it," Dr. Feinberg continued. "Community water fluoridation, sealant programs for children, teaching people how to take care of their families'' teeth and gums, and getting the greatest possible number of children and adults into dental homes are the keys to better oral health for everyone."
