Job Creation, Economic Growth and Keeping Canadians Safe

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 06/19/15 -- Today, the Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, the Honourable Peter Van Loan and Mr. Gourde, Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister, for Official Languages and for the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, highlighted the Government''s legislative accomplishments in Parliament since being re-elected in 2011. The focus has been on job creation and economic growth, keeping taxes low for hard-working families and protecting Canadians..

"Our approach to Parliament has been productive, hardworking and orderly and it has paid off with real results for Canadians," said Minister Van Loan. "This Parliament alone saw over 160 bills receive Royal Assent, with several more expected to become law in the coming days - making this the most productive Parliament in two decades."

"Under the strong leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, we kept our commitments and once again delivered results on the things that matters to Canadians - creating and protecting jobs, keeping taxes low and keeping Canadians and their families safe in a dangerous and uncertain world," said Mr. Gourde.

This spring, the cornerstone of the Government''s work in the House of Commons has been the passage of Economic Action Plan 2015 - a low-tax plan that will help to create jobs, spur economic growth, and ensure long-term prosperity for all Canadians.

In addition to five job-creating, low tax budgets, Parliament has also passed several pieces of important legislation benefiting the economy, including:

During the course of this Parliament, the Government also passed into law free trade agreements with Jordan, Panama, Honduras and South Korea - together with the free trade agreement with the European Union, the Government has concluded negotiations of trade agreements with 38 countries.

In addition to important economic accomplishments, the Government kept its commitment to keep our streets and communities safe and to ensure the safety and security of Canadians from the ever-evolving threat of jihadi terrorism. The Anti-terrorism Act, 2015 became law. A core piece of legislation, it responds to the evolving threat of jihadi terrorists who are directly threatening Canadians.

"The world is an increasingly dangerous place and Canada is not immune from the threat of terrorism," said Van Loan. "The Anti-terrorism Act, 2015, demonstrates our government''s leadership in the global fight against dangerous jihadi terrorists."

Our Government has also chosen to join our allies and fight these terrorist threats with vigilance and real action and as a result introduced a motion to extend and expand Canada''s mission to counter the global terrorist threat of ISIS.

In addition to the Government''s 117 legislative measures, at least 40 private Member''s bills will become law before Parliament rises.

"This Parliament has been marked by an unprecedented level of individual Members of Parliament bringing forward and passing ideas which are very important to them and their constituents," added Minister Van Loan. "Under Prime Minister Harper''s leadership, more than three times as many private Members'' bills have become law than under any other Prime Minister."

A backgrounder outlining 41st Parliament''s legislative accomplishments is attached.
