Harper Government Welcomes Progress of its Legislative Priorities
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 06/15/15 -- Today, the Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, the Honourable Peter Van Loan and the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, provided an update to Canadians on the Government''s legislative progress.
"This year our Government has remained focused on what matters to Canadians: creating and protecting jobs, keeping taxes low and keeping Canadians and their families safe in a dangerous and uncertain world," said Minister Van Loan. "Our Government has aimed to have a productive, hardworking and orderly Parliament."
As a result of this focus, later this week the Government expects to see numerous pieces of important legislation become law, with even more expected to cross the finish line before Parliament rises.
One of these important pieces of legislation will of course be Bill C-51, the Anti-terrorism Act, 2015.
The Anti-terrorism Act, 2015, will become law this week. Bill C-51 will criminalize advocating terrorism; help prevent terrorists from travelling and recruiting others; and provide our police forces with the tools they need to respond to the terrorist threat.
"Our Government knows that the highest calling of any government is to keep its citizens safe and that that is why our Government has taken action and introduced the Anti-terrorism Act, 2015.," said Van Loan. "Bill C-51 responds to the ever evolving threat of jihadi terrorists who are directly threatening Canadians and demonstrates our government''s leadership in the global fight against terrorism."
Several other important pieces of legislation will receive Royal Assent this week, some of which include:
Today, the House will debate and vote on Bill C-59, the Economic Action Plan 2015 Act, No. 1 - the cornerstone of the government''s economy-focused agenda - at third reading.
"This bill implements our balanced budget - supporting jobs and growth, helping families and communities prosper, and ensuring the security of Canadians," said Minister Lebel.
The Government intends to see Economic Action Plan 2015 become law before Parliament concludes its business.
"As we have demonstrated through the passage of legislation, Canadians can count on our Government to continue to focus on what matters most to Canadians: creating jobs and opportunity, keeping taxes low, and ensuring the safety and security of their families," said Van Loan.
Several other pieces of important legislation are expected to become law before Parliament rises.
