The Annotated Build-It-Yourself Science Laboratory, New From Maker Media

ID: 1363868

(firmenpresse) - SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 06/04/15 -- Originally published in 1963 by Raymond E. Barrett, Build-It-Yourself Science Laboratory introduced legions of children to the experimental sciences before falling out of copyright. Now, Evil Mad Scientist Lab''s Windell Oskay has rescued it from obscurity and updated for modern audiences, re-launching it as The Annotated Build-It-Yourself Science Laboratory: Build Over 200 Pieces of Scientific Equipment! (Maker Media; $24.99).

A popular science text from those innocent days when it was perfectly possible to purchase a box of potassium permanganate from the corner chemist or scrape radioactive paint off an alarm clock, Barrett''s original content remains, but the 2015 Annotated update is marked-up in bright, readable boxes that offer modern-day safety advice (please don''t touch radioactive particles with your bare hands!), tips on where to obtain equipment now that the corner chemist no longer exists, and new information gleaned from the scientific advances of the last 50 years.

"Times have changed, and so has science education," says author Windell Oskay. "What were once ''cutting edge'' experiments for youngsters are now important basics that everyone should know. People of all ages who are interested in learning essential principles of experimental science and instrumentation will enjoy reading about or following along with this ''back to basics'' approach to learning how things work. For students of any age, it also provides a huge wealth of science fair project ideas with over 1,600 open-ended questions for research."

A classic that just got better with age, The Annotated Build-It-Yourself Science Laboratory has the blessing of Barrett''s son, who supports this refresh of his father''s seminal work.

"My father''s purpose in life was to see the excitement of discovery from children experimenting. It''s wonderful seeing Windell Oskay bringing this book back to stimulate the next generation of children," says Stephen Barrett.

Perfect for parents, educators, and students ages 10 and up, The Annotated Build-It-Yourself Science Laboratory touches upon every branch of scientific inquiry with hands-on projects, plenty of easy-to-understand explanations of natural phenomena, and a road map to thinking -- and building -- like a scientist.

"As relevant today as when it was first published, this book will support curious people of all ages to engage in serious fun -- the starting points for falling in love with science all over again!" --Mike Petrich, Tinkering Studio, San Francisco''s Exploratorium

"Much, much more than a DIY Lab. It''s really a fairly full course in experimental science." --Forrest M. Mims III, author and amateur scientist
