Councilwoman Nury Martinez Kicks Off New Season of Paddle the LA River

(firmenpresse) - LOS ANGELES, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 06/03/15 -- The Los Angeles Conservation Corps is proud to host Los Angeles Councilwoman Nury Martinez on June 4th to kick off the beginning of the 2015 season for their program, . Tickets for the summer season are on sale now for guided kayak tours down a 1.5-mile stretch of the LA River in the San Fernando Valley.

"Summer is always a special season for Valley residents," said Councilwoman Martinez. "I''m proud to welcome families from across our City and introduce them to the natural beauty of the Sepulveda Basin. I encourage everyone to visit the Valley with their children and friends and paddle the LA River."

Other June 4th speakers include: Bruce Saito and Wendy Butts of the Los Angeles Conservation Corps, and project partners representatives from Pacoima Beautiful, Urban Semillas, and Save the Drop LA.

is a member of the representing the Sixth District which includes Lake Balboa, Van Nuys, Sun Valley, Panorama City and Arleta. She was elected in a special election on July 23, 2013 to succeed , who vacated his seat to become U.S. House Representative for California''s 29th Congressional District. Martinez is the only woman serving on the City Council, and the first Latina member in a quarter century.

Coming out to support the Paddle the LA River program coincides with the Councilwoman''s focus on delivering resources to the Valley.

The LA Conservation Corps program travels down a section of the river that has a natural dirt bottom with a host of wildlife and an impressive ecosystem. The Paddle the LA River program represents the collective efforts of several environmental organizations uniting to enhance the public perception about the Los Angeles River. Paddle the LA River is partnering this year with Urban Semillas, Pacoima Beautiful and the Mayor''s office with their "Save the Drop" initiative in an effort to educate the public about water usage.

The program will run from June 4 to September 20, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at $50 per ticket plus a processing fee. Participants will assemble at the parking lot near the entrance of Lake Balboa/Anthony C. Beilenson Park off of Balboa Blvd between Victory Blvd and Burbank Blvd.

The LA Conservation Corps'' primary mission is to provide at risk young adults and school-aged youth with opportunities for success through job skills training, education and work experience with an emphasis on conservation and service projects that benefit the community.
