Automakers and Suppliers Can Provide Input Directly to Open Source Developer Community for the First Time

(firmenpresse) - SAN FRANCISCO, CA and TOKYO, JAPAN -- (Marketwired) -- 05/31/15 -- (AUTOMOTIVE LINUX SUMMIT) -- Automotive Grade Linux (AGL), a collaborative open source project developing a common, Linux-based software stack for the connected car, today announced availability of the . It''s the industry''s first open in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) software specification that allows automakers and suppliers to collaborate directly with AGL''s global community of developers and advance the creation of a de facto reference platform for the connected car.

"For the first time in the history of the industry automakers have the ability to see and provide requirements directly to the open source developer community," said Dan Cauchy, general manager of automotive, Linux Foundation. "Making it fully open and available to all allows for greater participation from the industry that can now take ownership and contribute to building an open, common platform for the connected car."

AGL is building the industry''s first fully open automotive platform, allowing automakers to leverage a growing software stack based on Linux while retaining the ability to create their own branded user experience. Open collaboration within the AGL community means support for multi-architectures and features to bolster the IVI experience.

AGL Requirements Specification 1.0 is an important milestone for the industry as it moves toward the adoption of an open source development methodology to more rapidly innovate and create a safe and reliable connected car experience. It allows OEMs and suppliers to identify gaps between the specification and code and provide input directly to the developer community for resolution in future AGL releases. Other key highlights of AGL Requirements Specification 1.0:

It defines a highly integrated Linux-based software reference platform for IVI.

It defines requirements for multiple services such as WiFi, Bluetooth, multimedia, location based services, application lifecycle management and several others.

It defines both a native and HTML5 application framework.

It defines connectivity and interaction with the vehicle bus (CAN, MOST) with APIs for middleware and applications.

The AGL Requirements Specification 1.0 and AGL code are free to download and anyone can participate in the open source community. Learn more: .
