Memphis-Based Design Studio Collect + Curate and Retailer City & State Add to City''s Adaptive Reuse Trend
(firmenpresse) - MEMPHIS, TN -- (Marketwired) -- 05/06/15 -- Memphis design studio Collect + Curate marked its first anniversary with two adaptive reuse projects in the flourishing Broad Avenue Arts District, Propcellar Vintage Rentals and City & State, a retail and craft coffee shop now open at 2625 Broad. Together, Collect + Curate and City & State preserved the character and authenticity of a historical building while transforming it into a shopping destination inspired by the old-time general store.
City & State''s owners, Luis and Lisa Toro, are longtime Memphis residents with a passion for craftsmanship and admiration for makers and businesses that truly care about their products. Their repurposing of a long-empty building supports the couple''s concept of celebrating quality, heritage and fair trade products. This theme is also carried out by many of the store''s independent artisans who reuse materials to create meaningful items filled with their own unique history.
Collect + Curate founder and Memphis-native Natalie Lieberman is a NCIDQ-certified interior designer specializing in restaurant design and adaptive reuse, with almost fifteen years of experience in these areas. Her eye for reinvention gave the time-worn brick structure modern upgrades without sacrificing its original industrial-chic aesthetic. Following the Toros'' commitment to integrity, she favored furnishings that are handmade in the U.S. using sustainable materials whenever possible.
Prior to returning to Memphis, Lieberman worked in Atlanta focusing on hotel and restaurant design. During her time there, Lieberman witnessed the rise of the urban revitalization movement and is excited to see this trend grow here, saying, "I think Memphis has always valued its history and architecture where some cities have tended to raze older buildings. Adaptive reuse has become a trend that now is helping to revitalize these great neighborhoods in the city. Being a part of this movement is a dream come true for me. It has been at work for years, but is gaining momentum quite rapidly now, thanks to passionate visionaries and a generation of folks who want to see the best version of Memphis come to fruition."
City & State''s vision brings another growing trend to Memphis, the burgeoning "makers movement" sweeping the country. The store''s repertoire of primarily handmade and small batch creations includes clothing for men and women, home goods, toys, an apothecary, and a craft coffee house that will introduce a Third Wave coffee purveyor, Intelligentsia, to the Memphis coffee culture. The roster of over 400 vendors, which will rotate in the store and online, includes local makers, like Paper & Clay; Nashville-based denim maker Imogene + Willie; and under the radar makers from all over. As Lisa Toro shares, "We''re eager to bring goods from around the country, and sometimes beyond, to the Memphis market. Many of our artisans'' goods aren''t carried anywhere else in the city."
The stylistic statement of City & State embodies the artistic spirit of Broad Avenue itself, with Lieberman''s addition of modern touches putting an edgier twist on the shop''s rough-hewn and handcrafted look. Mr. Toro, a graphic designer, created stencils to paint playful patterns on the walls, further adding to the inimitable personality of the store. Throughout the space, materials like plaster, brick and concrete are complimented with abundant use of wood finishes and furniture, resulting in a warm and inviting retail experience that pays tribute to the building''s early roots and to its evolving neighborhood.

City & State is an artisan-driven store that celebrates quality, heritage and fair trade through its selection of handmade goods from sustainable companies. The City & State craft coffee house partner is Intelligentsia, a like-minded company that buys its beans directly from farmers and is considered part of America''s "Third Wave" coffee movement. This retail concept is the brainchild of Lisa and Luis Toro, who scour the country, and sometimes beyond, to find the best products for their clients.
