MPCC Chair in Annual Report 2014: "Ensuring Accountability Depends on Access to Information..."

ID: 1356951

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 05/06/15 -- ''Ensuring Accountability'' is more than just the title of the annual report tabled today in the House of Commons by the Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of National Defence, on behalf of the Military Police Complaints Commission of Canada (MPCC).

It is a reminder of the MPCC''s important role: to provide for greater public accountability by the military police and the chain of command in relation to military police investigations.

And, according to recently retired Commission Chairperson Glenn M. Stannard, the MPCC''s ability to ensure accountability depends in large part on its access to the information it needs to evaluate and investigate complaints. In this report, Mr. Stannard reiterates the Commission''s intention to continue to press for a full set of MP Orders, the policies, practices and procedures that members of the military police must follow in carrying out their duties.

"The nature of our work, the findings and recommendations of our comprehensive reviews and investigations, may sometimes be seen to be at odds with the Military Police," states Mr. Stannard in this report. "But the values of the MPCC and those of the organization it oversees are the same: integrity, respect and professionalism."

2014 was a busy year for the MPCC. The Commission''s ever-increasing caseload included an ongoing complex, multi-jurisdictional conduct complaint, in addition to the completion of the Interim Report on the Fynes Public Interest Hearing. The , which provides an overview and discussion of the MPCC''s interference complaint decisions, was released in August.

The Military Police Complaints Commission of Canada reviews and investigates complaints concerning military police conduct and investigates allegations of interference in military police investigations. It reports its findings and makes recommendations directly to the military police and national defence leadership.
