Thunder Bay Contractor Remains Unpaid Over Flood Remediation Work in Kashechewan First Nation
Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada Refuses to Pay Multi-Million Dollar Invoice for Work Completed in 2013
(firmenpresse) - THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 05/01/15 -- Burmet Northern Ltd. has been forced to take legal action against Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada due to a $3.6 million outstanding invoice for work completed in Kashechewan First Nation two years ago.
Following flood damage in 2013, the Federal Government commissioned Burmet Northern Ltd. in May 2013 for remediation work in Kashechewan First Nation. According to Burmet Northern Ltd. General Manager Monty Romeo, the company spent five months in the remote community. "Burmet Northern hired local people, rented local equipment, and purchased local supplies and materials, all from or within Kashechewan First Nation to complete the project," says Romeo. "Burmet Northern has paid its employees, suppliers, and sub-contractors, and is now left holding a multi-million dollar bill because of Federal Government mismanagement."
Between May and September of 2013, Burmet Northern Ltd. completed crucial emergency remediation work in the remote northern reserve, when approximately 1,500 residents were forced to leave their homes due to flooding. Burmet Northern Ltd. made it possible for community members to return home by completing restoration, repairs, renovations, and general clean-up to the lands, along with repairs to Health Canada buildings, School Board structures, and 39 homes that were damaged by flood waters.
Romeo states that throughout the entire process Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada approved invoices monthly and met with company representatives on several occasions to supervise and oversee the project. "With recent flooding in the community and another evacuation, more work will be required and it insults me that other contractors will be paid to do this while our invoice from two years ago remains outstanding," says Romeo.
The non-payment by the Federal Government has seriously impacted the Thunder Bay-based operation and its plans for expansion. Romeo states, "I would rather see Burmet employ more staff to work on new construction projects than pay lawyers to collect money owed to it by my own government."
Over the past year Burmet Northern Ltd. has continued to press the Federal Government for payment. "Local officials from Aboriginal Affairs are telling company representatives that there is nothing they can do about the unpaid invoices," continues Romeo. "If this is the way the Federal Government handles its bills for First Nation projects, its not surprising that Kashechewan First Nation continues to experience flooding difficulties."
