BSA - LA Celebrates 100th Birthday
Scouting Continues to Develop Youth Leaders
(firmenpresse) - LOS ANGELES, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/27/15 -- 2015 marks the Boy Scouts of America - Los Angeles Area Council''s (LAAC) 100th Birthday. When Scouting was brought to America from England at the turn of the 20th century, it quickly became the largest youth organization in the United States. It gives boys and their families educational programs to build character; teaches them about the responsibilities of citizenship; and, develops personal fitness. Like any organization that has reached this age, the BSA has experienced growing pains, but its mission has never wavered -- to develop young people of character by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law:
On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times, to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.
A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.
Scouting is a volunteer organization led from the bottom up. It is comprised of youth, parents, friends of Scouting, sponsoring organizations, and paid staff responsible for supporting its members. It is a nonprofit organization funded entirely by donations.
The LAAC covers one of the largest urban populations in the country -- South Pasadena in the north; Westchester in the west; Whittier in the east; San Pedro in the south; and all points in between. Membership is approximately 20,000 and includes traditional Cub Scouts ages 7 to 10; Boy Scouts ages 11 to 17; Venturing young men and women ages 13 to 21 that enjoy high adventure special interests; and co-ed Explorers ages 14 to 20 who want real world work experience.
During the early years, Scouting was comprised of traditional families and only men were allowed to be Scout Masters and Cub Leaders. Today''s Cub and Scout leader, trainer, and organizer is just as likely to be a woman.
"I learned about Scouting in Trinidad-Tobago while growing up. As a single mom I knew that Scouting would provide my son with structure, leadership skills, and a sense of self-worth," said D''Anne Hutchinson of Pico Rivera. "It has also provided me with friendships and a support system that I''ve enjoyed for nearly 25 years," she continued.
Families from China have discovered the benefits of an outdoor summer camp experience and have been sending their children to LAAC camps for the last three years. One Chinese parent said, "We are allowed to have only one child in our country. So our children are the center of attention and receive all the love and resources of the family. If we don''t teach our children to share and to become well-rounded, our country will suffer the consequences."
With all the negative influences in the world today, Scouting provides children with a positive peer group who can encourage them and help them develop character and leadership skills. The BSA - LAAC will continue to deliver quality programs to youth, leaders, and the community at large for years to come.
