Treaty 8 First Nations Head to Court to Fight for Their Treaty Rights
BC Supreme Court Lawsuit Seeks to Block Site C Dam
(firmenpresse) - VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/22/15 -- Three Treaty 8 First Nations consisting of Prophet River First Nation, West Moberly First Nations and the McLeod Lake Indian Band will appear in the Supreme Court of BC on Thursday this week, as hearings begin in their lawsuit against the BC government aimed at stopping the Site C Dam project.
The lawsuit, filed in November 2014, alleges that Site C infringes the First Nations'' Treaty Rights. The decision to issue an Environmental Assessment certificate while ignoring the impacts to the Treaty 8 First Nations was not justified and the First Nations are arguing the EA certificate quashed or set aside given these circumstances.

A new legal defence fund for the Nations'' legal challenges against Site C Dam is being developed. The Treaty 8 nations are working with RAVEN - a Victoria-based charitable organization that raises funds to assist First Nations who enforce their rights and title to protect their traditional territories.
