Anyone with an Xbox One Gold subscription is a simple 10gb or so download away from rolling up a half-elf rogue and joining in the Neverwinter festivities. Just don’t expect the sort of visual quality that you’ve seen in the PC screenshots. The frame rate is pretty rough, and the controls mighty convoluted—opening the inventory requires holding down LB and pressing left on the d-pad. It’s crazy. Then again it’s developer Cryptic’s first console release, so some weirdness is to be expected.
Still, the game plays much like its PC counterpart, only its incredibly quiet and peaceful. Plenty of people playing, but no one talking. It’s kind of nice.
I was a big fan of Neverwinter when it launched in 2013, thanks to its refreshingly fast pace and clever, comparatively unobtrusive free-to-play model. It seemed like a logical fit for controllers, thanks to the limited action set each player is allotted — and as it turns out, it is. Neverwinter on Xbox One manages to map your heroes'' abilities effortlessly across the controller, in a scheme that feels great both in and out of combat. Unfortunately, other aspects of the port totally miss the mark; in terms of performance, Neverwinter on Xbox One can really take a dive.

FF is by far the better game. Neverwinter is polished but it’s still very much a free to play first game, everything feels a little too much like filler content and nothing’s super fleshed out.
FFXIV is really high quality throughout, though the UI isn’t as nice imo. - Ruslan

I’m hoping some of the performance issues are due to server congestion of launch day. But man I hate that spam that fills the screen whenever someone spends Zen to open some kind of box. - peter.smith
I played Neverwinter on PC a bit and its got some good things going for it. The combat is very reactive and fast, better than any MMO I’ve ever played. The environments are small but very detailed. Lots of good DnD lore about. I’ve heard the PvP is pretty P2W but soloing through the main content can easily be done for free. - Donald Pump
