Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is pleased to announce the acquisition of ten items from the Winkworth Collection sold by auctioneer Christie''s in London, England yesterday. This final part of the Winkworth Collection comes from the armoires, cabinets, mantles and walls of the now-sold Kensington mansion that Peter Winkworth and his late wife, Franca, occupied for 50 years.
In 2002 and 2008, LAC acquired the majority of the Winkworth Collection. This new acquisition will complement the existing Peter Winkworth Collection of Canadiana and greatly enrich LAC''s holdings.
The works of documentary art that form the Winkworth Collection provide an unparalleled glimpse into Pre-Confederation and 19th-century life in Canada. The ten items expand LAC''s documentary art coverage of subjects related to First Nations people, arctic exploration and economic activity, among other subjects. Included in the selected items is the work of several highly significant artists such as .
