Princess Maja von Hohenzollern campaigns against the illegal dog massacre in Romania

(firmenpresse) - Last year, thousands of dogs were caught brutally and killed in dog shelters. During the last months, more and more voices have been raised all over Europe for an animal-friendly solution of the „problems“ relating to stray dogs in Romania. The most famous member of the royal family von Hohenzollern has always raised her voice against the dog killings. Now she entered a massive protest again, in cooperation with the animal rights organisation AnimalsUnited.

Dogs are caught brutally and sometimes even snatched away from their owners under the pretext of civil safety in Romania in order to receive a bounty of approximately 50 EUR per dog. The dog catchers keep forcing their way ever further into the personal area of citizens. The captured and mostly very frightened dogs are taken to so-called „shelters“, where they are killed or left to themselves lacking food and in disastrous hygienic conditions. The Romanian dog catchers keep trying to justify their illegal dog-catching activities with the „dangerous packs of stray dogs“. The underlying reason is in fact a great deal of money. A whole new „industry“ has emerged from the dog killings, characterised by mafia-like structures, supported by municipalities and nationally as well as internationally tolerated. It’s a matter of millions of euros. The dog catchers, the builders of new shelters, the operators of the incineration plants – many people make money with the death of the dogs. The „resource dog“ is a profitable business model. As a result, the dog catchers try to catch dogs at all costs – no matter if the dogs are actually stray dogs or not.

Most Romanians oppose the dog killings, but this does not make a difference to those who make money with the killings. Access to the municipal shelters is denied in most cases and their original intention to find homes for the dogs is hardly pursued anymore. The adoption requirements have become extremely complicated, which leads to the fact that fewer and fewer dogs are adopted. Adoption has been replaced by execution. Animal rights activists all over Europe call for an immediate end of the cruel an illegal method and the establishment of mandatory regulations for dealing with stray animals at EU level. Amongst them the animal rights activists of ANIMALS UNITED, who have already filmed undercover in animal shelters, pursued dog catchers during their prowls and organised demonstrations in Bucharest, throughout Germany and in front of the European Parliament in Brussels. Following their first campaign theme in cooperation with the German music legend Peter Maffay, who has a Romanian-German family background, they want to inform even more people about the dramatic situation in Romania with the support of Princess Maja von Hohenzollern. The goal is to increase pressure on the European Union, asking the EU to stop hiding behind its member states in the matter of animal protection and to finally intervene instead.

“The world must see what’s going on here! People who treat dogs in such a manner will never take care of other animals or people. European and Romanian authorities are urgently requested to stop the Romanian mafia, to start neutering projects, to inform the citizens, to address the problem at source and to let got of measures like the current ones, which only lead to violence and greed for profit,” says Viktor Gebhart from ANIMALS UNITED. “The new president Johannis, an opponent of the killings, must – of all people – turn his words into deeds! Europe is watching his actions full of hope!” Maja, who has already received numerous important international awards for her social commitment all over the world, also supports this request. She joined the campaign PROJECT ROMANIA by ANIMALS UNITED not only with her face but also with a clear statement: “Humanity instead of murder! Replace execution by neutering and adoption. Stop the Romanian dog massacre!” Together with ANIMALS UNITED, she repeats her call to stop the killings immediately and to replace them by humane solutions like the neutering of the dogs. “Neutering and adoption are the only measures which can help animals sustainably. This is the only way to make sure that the animals can live bit by bit healthier and more peaceful on the streets, that there will be no further offspring and that the “problems” with stray animals can be solved in the long term.”

The animal rights activist has been socially engaged for years and she is particularly committed to European stray animals. She saved the dog Emily in her arms from the streets – with a blind eye, almost dead from starvation, her body full of pellets. Since then the dog enjoys her beautiful new life with Princess Maja and she becomes more and more revitalised. The campaign theme might not only be a great success amongst animal rights activists but it will also cause a stir beyond and generate the attention of even more people.
