Federal Scientists Hoping to Discuss "Scientific Integrity" Forced to Meet Offsite
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 03/23/15 -- Environment Canada managers at a government building in Gatineau, Quebec, along with managers at several other government science sites, have recently reversed a longstanding practice of allowing federal scientists to meet with their union during lunch hours on government premises.
"This is a very worrying development," says Debi Daviau, President of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC), which represents the scientists. "Given the government''s recent, overly restrictive communications policies that have led to the muzzling of federal scientists, it''s hard not to see this as anything but another example of the government shutting down communication among scientists."
In December, PIPSC science members launched a well-publicized initiative calling on the federal government to bargain "scientific integrity" agreements as part of the current round of collective bargaining. The union hopes the proposed agreements would help ensure that standards in federal government science are maintained despite ongoing and widespread cuts to jobs, programs and services.
PIPSC''s President Debi Daviau and other union officials representing federal government scientists will be on hand to distribute special bargaining meeting invitations to scientists employed by Environment Canada at 200 Boulevard Sacre Coeur (the Fontaine Building) in Gatineau, Quebec, between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. on Monday, March 23, 2015.
The invitations direct members to meet offsite in a nearby church.
PIPSC represents approximately 15,000 federal government scientists.
