Prior to writing novels, McDowell taught in universities in the U.S., Canada and Australia. During that period of her life, she wrote six professional books that are still standard texts in her field. Now retired, she has returned to her first love, writing fiction, and is having the time of her life. She enjoys traveling, and her books are inspired by places that she knows and loves.
