Belgrade: Patient released from hospital with a ventricular assist device

ID: 1343348

Vladimir Petkovic is the first patient in Serbia with a biventricular ventricular assist device

(firmenpresse) - His heart is weak. It has increasingly enlarged and cannot pump enough blood through his body. To save Vladimir Petkovic’s life, he received an EXCOR® Adult – a biventricular ventricular assist device (BVAD) – shortly before Christmas of last year. He recovers from day to day and was now able to leave hospital and to go home. “I’m very glad to receive this therapy”, said Vladimir Petkovic. He is the first Serbian patient with a BVAD.

For Vladimir Petkovic the EXCOR® system was the key to survive. The 47-year-old Serbian suffers from a dilated cardiomyopathy: His heart has enlarged and cannot pump enough blood through his body. The pneumatically driven EXCOR® system of the German company Berlin Heart GmbH helps him to recover. The device supports both ventricles of his heart. How it works: Two EXCOR® blood pumps outside his body are connected to the heart via cannulae and ensure that blood is pumped through the body''s circulation system and the pulmonary circulation system. The implantation was performed by Prof. Arsen D. Ristic, the general director of the Institute for Cardiovascular Disease in Belgrade. Prof. Christof Schmid from the University Hospital Regensburg in Germany provided support during the procedure.

In January, Vladimir Petkovic has been switched from the stationary of the EXCOR® system to the mobile driving system Excor, which allows him to move very freely outside of the hospital: “I’m very glad to receive this therapy. It is almost like being lucky to catch the last train”, said Petkovic after his first walk with the mobile device.

While he is waiting for a suitable donor heart, he can now regain strength. The patient, his family and the clinic team were trained to deal with the EXCOR® system.

Since Vladimir Petkovic is the first Serbian patient with a BVAD his case attracted the attention of the national media. The succes was made possible thanks to a cooperation between the Institute for Cardiovascular Disease, the Serbian partner Denta-BP-pharm and Berlin Heart GmbH.

About EXCOR®
The EXCOR® ventricular assist device mechanically supports the cardiac function of patients with an advanced stage heart failure. EXCOR® has been implanted in more than 3,600 patients worldwide – from newborns to adults.
