Composers Make Con Edison Grants Sing
Residency Program Accepting Applicants for Spring
(firmenpresse) - NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwired) -- 03/06/15 -- Nina Siniakova is finding that the room at Flushing Town Hall with the grand piano provides the solitude she needs to compose music.
Siniakova uses the room as part of the program, which provides musicians with places to work. She says music allows her to learn about life, the universe and herself.
Siniakova, a Belarus native moved to Queens with her husband and children six years ago, said she doesn''t crave fame, but would like people to recognize her music. She hopes the strides she makes at the Flushing Town Hall help her bring music to a worldwide audience.
"For a composer, it''s not just important to actually compose," she said. "It''s important to perform and be heard."
"The music that these talented composers write and play contributes to the cultural vitality of our community," said Frances A. Resheske, Con Edison''s senior vice president, Public Affairs. "Con Edison is proud to support their artistic growth so that they can share their music for all of us to enjoy."
Siniakova''s music has been performed throughout Europe, Japan and in the United States. She is a recipient of DAAD Stipend, Grant of St-Petersburg Government and a winner of the Melodia Women''s Choir NYC commission competition.
In 2013 she launched Metis Music Management, presenting her first project Have a Very Jazzy Christmas! at Carnegie Hall.
Siniakova is one of eight artists in the residency program, which Con Edison has supported with $43,500 in grants -- enough to help 41 composers since 2009.
David Johnston, executive director with Exploring the Metropolis, said the organization partners with facilities like Brooklyn Youth Chorus Academy, Bloomingdale School of Music, Flushing Town Hall, and the Filomen M D''Agostino Greenberg Music School at Lighthouse Guild International. The organization then makes the space available to the musicians.
The organization will be accepting applications for the 2015-16 program this spring.
