An avid traveler, Love Shawls'' designer and Chief Glam Officer Shary Shavalian, has always been creatively inspired by the artistic expression of foreign cultures. "I have always been drawn to the richness of global culture," says Shavalian. "Since I was a child, I''ve collected beads, stones and talismans that have been cherished through the ages -- and observed the ubiquitous presence of shawls, scarfs and wraps," adds Shavalian.
On her last trip to the Middle East and Turkey, she not only fell in love with the ancient history, rich pageant of colors and textiles found in both regions, she was also struck by the rampant social and gender inequality, as well as the high level of illiteracy among many of the women she met. This stark realization inspired Shavalian to make it her mission to help empower marginalized women to achieve independence through education and enterprise. After working closely with groups of women in both Turkey and Iran -- teaching them how weave, dye fabrics and knit -- Shavalian created Love Shawls to showcase their handcrafted textiles as well as provide an opportunity for enterprise to foster self-sufficiency. Through Love Shawls, not only does Shavalian provide a revenue stream for underserved women abroad, but proceeds from the sale of each garment benefits homeless, mentally ill and battered women here in the U.S.
