(firmenpresse) - “Afroeurope(at)ns: Black Cultures and Identities in Europe“ is an international research community that will hold its fifth international conference at the University of Münster, Germany, from 16 - 19 September 2015.
African European Studies explore social spaces and cultural practices that are characterised by a series of contemporary and historical overlaps between Africa and Europe. The conference aims to provide perspectives on specific strands of this diverse and vibrant field, including both established and emerging research areas of a trans- and multidisciplinary nature. The conference showcases topics from various disciplines dealing with different forms of cultural representation. In addition to academics, artists, and activists, the work of authors, social workers, journalists and those with a specific interest in the field falls into the remit of the conference.
Topics will include:
- Racism(s) and austerity: comparative approaches across Europe
- Colonial remains and historical interaction between Africa and Europe
- Growing up African European: e.g. youth culture; adoption; children’s literature
- ‘Remember the ship in citizenship’ (John Agard): visions and crises of multicultures
- Border control: refugees, migrants, visitors
Presentations – to be held in English, Spanish, French and German – are not restricted to written academic texts but include performances, readings, panel discussions, and workshops.
