The public, not-for-profit corporation was founded in 1974 with the aim of raising and increasing philanthropic support for the university and is managed in close cooperation with the school''s chancellor, faculty heads and administrative staff. "UC Santa Cruz has a long history of academic excellence and has significantly shaped scientific research projects of the 21st century," says Tomchin. "The school promotes the innovative spirit of its students and inspires them to become world-class scientists who seek to explore and think outside of the box. Every year, the UC Santa Cruz Foundation sponsors two signature lectures, the Foundation Forum, which is typically given by the current Foundation Medal recipient, and the Sidhartha Maitra Memorial Lecture, which strives to provide intellectual enrichment. In November 2014, the 14th annual Sidhartha lecture, which was held at the Music Center Recital Hall, featured professor of anthropology, author, filmmaker, and explorer, Wade Davis, who spoke about his bestselling book "The Wayfinders: Why Ancient Wisdom Matters in a Modern World." The event was sold out well in advance, so the university decided to make the lecture available for live viewing online. "Davis is such an inspiring speaker, scholar and poet," raved Stanley Tomchin. "During his presentation he took the audience on a journey through the history of indigenous peoples from Polynesia to the Andes, from Nepal to the Australian aborigines. There were so many lessons to be learned from his words, maybe most importantly that we need to recognize the value of diversity in the human spirit, the vital role different cultures and varying belief systems have and the necessity to embrace all that despite the oftentimes hectic chaos we are challenged with in our daily lives."
