onion.net: Starting the New Year with a new release
Development and operation of Web applications simplified
(PresseBox) - onion.net, the open modular platform for enterprise-class Web applications, has started 2015 with a new release.
With onion.net 4.5, the CMS experts from the Dortmund-based getit company have simplified the development and operation of Web applications and are shaping up to the challenges of tomorrow.
The most important innovations in onion.net 4.5:
Simplified distribution via NuGet packages in Visual Studio
Modular extensions can be added via NuGet packages
Cloud deployment in Microsoft® Azure
Data storage as required with SQL Compact or SQL Server
Desktop edition for easy evaluation on Windows PC
Fit for Azure
While there are certainly misgivings about the issue of cloud services, particularly in Germany, the benefits cannot be ignored. An important part of the performance specifications for the onion.net product team was therefore to ensure simple installation under Microsoft Azure or Windows Server.
NuGet as a service
The key here lies in the distribution of NuGet packages via the Microsoft Visual Studio development environment. A NuGet package comprises a set of files that are packed in a single file. This makes the addition, updating and deletion of libraries child''s play. When developers link their projects to the servers for onion.net NuGet packages, they have access to the latest distribution packages and extension modules. Updates and enhancements that are continuously supplied by onion.net come directly to the developer.
More freedom for developers
"It''s pretty much in the DNA of onion.net to offer developers the greatest possible amount of freedom," is how onion.net product manager Bernd Burkert explains the philosophy. At the outset free content modelling and simple content reusability were available, both of which still provide significant challenges for many web content management systems. Modules for the integration of leading business solutions followed, e.g. Microsoft SharePoint and hybris Commerce Suite, as well as a revolutionary operating concept. With the new Release 4.5, onion.net is taking a further step into the future.
The aim is platform independence
The basis of onion.net continues to be the Microsoft .NET Framework. "We are watching with great interest how Microsoft is driving forward the .NET Framework. The new aim of platform independence, e.g. with vNext, fits ideally within our overall strategy," according to Bernd Burkert, Product Manager at onion.net.
