Ring in the New Year Responsibly; Plan a Sober Ride Home
(firmenpresse) - OAKVILLE, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 12/30/14 -- As Canadians mark the end of 2014 and welcome a new year, MADD Canada and Allstate Canada want to thank the millions of people who are doing their part to end impaired driving.
"So many people have made the commitment to never drive impaired, and they take that responsibility seriously," said MADD Canada National President Angeliki Souranis. "They plan ahead for alternate transportation, and they share the sober driving message with family and friends. We are truly grateful to all those who are doing their part to prevent impaired driving."
Sadly, though, far too many people continue to drive after drinking, risking their own safety and the safety of everyone on the road with them. In 2012, nearly 60,000 Canadian drivers were charged with impaired driving offences.
"For anyone who thinks it is no big deal to drive impaired, consider the consequences," said Ms. Souranis. "Every year between 1,250 and 1,500 are killed and 63,000 are injured in impairment-related crashes. This is not a victim-less crime."
So this New Year''s- whether your plans involve going out to a party or having a quiet celebration with family and friends - make a resolution to have a sober ride home if you''re going to be drinking. Take a cab, take public transit, arrange a designated driver or plan to stay over.
"Impaired driving crashes are completely, 100%, preventable," said Allstate Insurance Company of Canada President and CEO John O''Donnell. "Before going out to your New Year''s celebration, decide how you are getting home safely. It only takes a few minutes and it could save a life. Let''s start the New Year right."
For those hosting parties, some simple precautions can help ensure no one drives away from your New Year''s gathering impaired:
Party hosts looking for non-alcohol beverage options to serve can consider MADD Virgin Drinks, which are available at participating supermarkets, drugstores and other retailers or online at or check out for non-alcohol drink recipes.
Finally, MADD Canada and Allstate Canada are encouraging motorists to be aware of other drivers and if they see any driver they suspect is impaired, call 911. One call could save a life.
