In addition to removing fatty tissue, he states that liposuction can be utilized to enhance body contour by creating a more aesthetically pleasing silhouette. The main difference between the two techniques, he discloses, is that liposuction utilizes cannula (tube) instruments to mechanically dislodge and remove fat while UAL uses ultrasound energy to break up fat cells. The fat cells will then be removed using a similar cannula technique as traditional liposuction.
Liposuction has been performed for decades and is generally considered to be a safe procedure, notes Dr. Matas; however, every surgery carries some risk of complications. Furthermore, he says that patients should be well-informed about to help determine if this method is appropriate for their aesthetic goals. Both techniques can be effective at reducing small fat deposits, he states, though liposuction usually is not recommended for individuals who have a great deal of excess weight. Additionally, he notes that if patients regain weight after the operation, there may be other areas that will increase in size. Furthermore, he says UAL can improve the appearance by tightening some of the skin laxity.
Ultimately, Dr. Matas believes that well-informed patients are often able to make decisions that lead to higher satisfaction with results. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the University of Miami Medical School, is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon practicing in the Orlando, FL area.
