Modernization of Canada Grain Act a Good Move for Barley Farmers

ID: 1324148

(firmenpresse) - CALGARY, ALBERTA -- (Marketwired) -- 12/09/14 -- Today''s announcement that the federal government has tabled Bill C-48; The Modernization of Canada''s Grain Industry Act is a welcome one for Alberta''s barley farmers.

The Act, introduced in the House of Commons earlier today, is the next step to ensure Canadian grain maintains its reputation for top quality and high standards worldwide.

"Canada''s reputation as a world-class exporter is one we are all proud of," said Alberta Barley Chairman Matt Sawyer, from his farm in Acme, Alberta. "All of the work we are doing to promote Canadian trade overseas must be supported by our ability to guarantee our quality standards at home and abroad."

The Act also establishes the authority for the Canadian Grain Commission to administer a producer compensation fund. This will provide a safeguard for farmers if a licensed grain buyer doesn''t pay for a delivery.

"By guaranteeing a safe selling environment, we are able to build confidence in a system that needed to be updated and modernized," he added.

Key amendments will ensure more consistency in the monitoring of grain safety, while also providing an updated review process for Canadian Grain Commission decisions.

"The new system''s been in place for over two years, and these changes are part of the process of ensuring Canada''s standards and practices are second to none," said Sawyer. "By enhancing the traceability and integrity of the entire system, we are building stronger and more focused trading relationships internationally."
