Along with mammography, breast self-exam or BSE is the simplest and most effective way to catch many forms of breast cancer early enough for successful treatment.
According to Dr. Debora Sedaghat of OC Women''s Care, the technique for BSE is relatively simple. "Women should choose a regular time of the month, perhaps a few days after the end of the menstrual cycle, and be sure to perform a BSE every month. The technique involves placing the fingers flat against the breast tissue and working around in a circular motion, feeling for any lumps or other abnormalities." According to Dr. Sedaghat, about 40 percent of all diagnosed breast cancers are caught when a woman reports a lump discovered in a breast self-exam.
