New Research From Panorama Education Shows That Students Feel School Is Less Safe Than Parents Do

ID: 1320753

(firmenpresse) - BOSTON, MA -- (Marketwired) -- 11/24/14 -- which helps K-12 schools improve through data analysis and feedback surveys of teachers, parents and students, announced today the results of a study conducted on the topic of school safety and climate using more than 59,000 school surveys.

On the topic of school safety, today''s media environment focuses on issues of bullying and school violence. Since parents engage with more media than their children, one might expect that parents would respond to survey questions about school safety less favorably than students.

However, aggregate analysis of survey responses from 117 schools nationwide (of mixed socio-economic, geographic and racial composition, with a mix of urban and suburban schools) conducted by Panorama Education found that students actually responded less positively to questions about school safety than parents.

After running statistical analysis on 59,000+ school surveys, Panorama Education''s research team found that:

In of the schools Panorama studied, students perceived school safety less favorably than parents.

Overall, students perceived safety less favorably than parents across Panorama''s 117-school sample.

Girls and boys responded to questions on school safety with virtually the same level of favorability.

"The analysis of school safety survey questions across over a hundred schools in different parts of the country raises several important questions," said Aaron Feuer, CEO and Co-Founder of Panorama Education. "For one, it suggests that parents may not always share the same perceptions of school safety as students. But, it also tells us that a small, yet sizable number of students simply don''t view school as safe -- despite the favorable ratings of the parents and students around them."

"Through statistical analysis of perception data, we''re able to get a broader perspective on key issues in schools like school climate and safety," added Feuer. "If we truly want to develop safe learning environments for all our students, then it''s vital to better understand how students and parents view important questions like safety. We also see from this set of surveys how critical it is to get student feedback directly from them and not make assumptions on how they feel about their own school climate and safety."
