WWF-Canada Salutes Quebec''s Environmental Assessment of Energy East
(firmenpresse) - MONTREAL, QUEBEC -- (Marketwired) -- 11/20/14 -- Quebec''s decision to place seven conditions on TransCanada''s Energy East pipeline before it moves forward sends a powerful signal that the government is serious about protecting St. Lawrence belugas and other threatened species in the region, says WWF.
The seven conditions, which appeared in a letter from Quebec Environment Minister''s David Heurtel to TransCanada CEO Russel K. Girling, include an environmental impact assessment on the entire Quebec portion of the project, the inclusion of a high-standard emergency response plan, and an obligation to consult with First Nations and local communities.
"This is an encouraging sign of leadership from Quebec," said David Miller, President and CEO of WWF-Canada. "WWF-Canada supports any measure that ensures the critical habitat of the beluga and other threatened species in the region is respected in the face of growing development pressures," he added.
Minister Heurtel''s letter also specified that TransCanada must file the environmental impact "without delay."
