Municipalities across the country benefitting this construction season

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 11/12/14 -- The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities, and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, issued the following statement today celebrating Canada''s renewed Federal Gas Tax Fund for municipalities across the country:

"We delivered on our commitment to Canadian communities: the construction season is now coming to a close in most areas of the country and the first payment of the renewed Gas Tax Fund has flowed to each province and territory, supporting hundreds of new projects across Canada this year and ensuring a seamless transition to the New Building Canada Plan."

"Since 2006, our Government has made significant improvements to the Gas Tax Fund; it has been extended, doubled, indexed and made permanent. As we move forward we will continue to deliver on our commitments to support local public infrastructure and renewed agreements are in place with each province and territory to accomplish just that. At close to $22 billion, the renewed Federal Gas Tax Fund is the largest component of the New Building Canada Plan, the largest long-term federal commitment to investing in Canada''s public infrastructure in our nation''s history."

"The Gas Tax Fund has flowed $14 billion directly to municipalities to support local infrastructure priorities since the program began. Whether funds are invested to keep our roads safe, to improve residents'' access to clean drinking water, to support community energy systems, to mitigate disaster or to help with the management of wastewater or solid waste, the federal Gas Tax Fund is more flexible than ever before and is making a difference in your community, contributing to our entire country''s prosperity. Our Government understands how important the Gas Tax Fund is for municipalities and that is why I am very happy that hundreds of new projects are being supported this year to help build local infrastructure that support healthy lifestyles, communities'' connectivity, transit systems and more."

Brad Woodside, President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, also added:

"The Federal Gas Tax Fund represents predictable, stable and long-term investments into our hometowns. These investments enable our communities to build the modern roads, bridges, water systems and transit networks that Canadians expect and deserve. This permanent and indexed fund is a model for federal-municipal cooperation in Canada."
