Retailers Applaud Government for Passage of Bill C-10 to Combat Illegal Tobacco

ID: 1316579

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 11/07/14 -- The Canadian Convenience Stores Association (CCSA) applauded the federal government for its commitment to fighting contraband tobacco, following Bill C-10''s receipt of royal assent in the House of Commons today.

"Bill C-10 is a significant victory for Canada''s convenience store owners, who are tasked with upholding many laws and regulations on the controlled sale of legal tobacco," says Alex Scholten, President of the CCSA. "It also provides necessary resources for the RCMP and law enforcement to keep our communities safe."

The CCSA had been actively working with parliamentarians and the RCMP to communicate the need for tougher penalties and additional enforcement to deter contraband tobacco offenders. The Association is hopeful these new laws will make traffickers of contraband think twice before selling this illegal product.

Contraband tobacco poses a serious threat to community safety in all regions of Canada, through its ties to organized crime, its link to drugs and illegal weapons trafficking, as well as its accessibility to youth.

The CCSA will continue to advocate for additional measures against illegal tobacco, as well as comprehensive fine recovery for repeat illegal tobacco offenders. "We have seen too many cases of fines going uncollected, and retailers believe active fine recovery would not only deter offenders, but also assist in recouping lost funds which could be put towards valuable government services," stressed Scholten.

"We applaud the government for the bill''s official passage today and will continue our dialogue with all levels of government as we look to eliminate contraband tobacco from Canadian communities."
