Our Place Hosts Public Debate on Issues Surrounding Poverty in Victoria

(firmenpresse) - VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwired) -- 11/06/14 -- The issues surrounding homelessness and affordable housing in Victoria affect everyone - not just those vulnerable citizens who are dealing with the struggle on a daily basis.

Poverty impacts so many things in the community from safety, healthcare, law enforcement, economic wellbeing, and neighbourly trust. Because of its importance, Our Place has invited four mayoral candidates to discuss their plans around the issues at a free public debate on Monday, Nov. 10. The debate will begin at 7 p.m. at Our Place, 919 Pandora Avenue.

The invited candidates - Stephen Andrew, Ida Chong, Dean Fortin and Lisa Helps - will be questioned on how they will deal with these issues by an esteemed panel, including Dave Obee, Editor-in-Chief of the Times Colonist; Mary Griffin, CHEK TV; and Dr. Bernie Pauley, University of Victoria Centre for Addictions Research. The debate will be moderated by Khalil Akhtar, co-host of CBC Radio''s On the Island.

"Homelessness and a lack of affordable housing are both major issues in Victoria," says Don Evans, executive director of Our Place. "And it''s important to know what strategies and solutions the candidates have in mind. We hope this forum will give the community an opportunity to hear about how the mayoral candidates plan to address these issues and better meet the needs of our city''s most vulnerable citizens."

Our Place is a unique community centre serving Greater Victoria''s most vulnerable: working poor, impoverished elderly, individuals with mental health and physical challenges, and the homeless. It provides 45 transitional housing units, over 1,200 meals per day, hot showers, free clothing, counseling and outreach services. Most importantly, it provides a sense of hope and belonging to our neighbours in need.
