Minister of Public Safety Responds to Federal Court of Appeal''s Ruling on the Canadian Security Intelligence Service Act
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 11/04/14 -- Today, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, responded to the Federal Court of Appeal''s decision related to the Canadian Security Intelligence Service Act:
"We acknowledge the Court''s ruling.
The Federal Court of Appeal decision addresses important aspects of CSIS'' mandate and investigative authorities.
For this reason, the Government has introduced Bill C-44, the Protection of Canada from Terrorists Act. The proposed legislation introduces amendments to the CSIS Act to confirm CSIS'' ability to investigate threats to the security of Canada outside of Canada.
At the same time, the Federal Court of Appeal decision left uncertain other important questions of law. The Government is seeking leave to appeal these issues to the Supreme Court of Canada.
It is our responsibility to equip Canada''s security and intelligence agencies with the tools they need in order to address threats and protect Canadians.
The Government of Canada will do whatever is necessary, within the law, to ensure the safety and security of Canadians."
