Dare2Give challenge launches with volunteer events in Ottawa and Toronto

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 11/03/14 -- His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, is issuing a challenge to all Canadians: dare someone to give with you! Dare2Give, the latest in the My Giving Moment campaign, is an opportunity for Canadians to dare their friends, family and colleagues to donate or volunteer with them. Each time someone gives their time, talent or money, they make Canada a more caring nation.

Research shows that one of the main reasons people decide to give is simply because someone asked them. An effective way to ask someone to do something is to dare them. That''s the idea behind Dare2Give: have Canadians dare each other in person, online and across social media and, in doing so, have a chance to win a prize for the charity of their choice.

"This year''s challenge is all about driving action and making a difference," said the Governor General. "We wanted to widen the circle on giving and provide a mechanism that Canadians and charities could use to dramatically increase giving. Dare2Give allows Canadians to dare their friends and families to give with them to not only amplify their efforts but also to create a better Canada."

Dare2Give will officially kick off in Ottawa at the Ottawa Humane Society (OHS) on Wednesday, November 5, 2014, at 1 p.m. (245 West Hunt Club Road). The Governor General and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will speak with a group of volunteers from Algonquin College and the OHS about the importance of stronger, more caring communities, and dare the group to give with them. Together they will participate in the shelter''s volunteer Dog Walking Program.

In Toronto, on Thursday, November 6, a large-scale installation called the Dare Wall will come to life at Union Station, between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. (Great Hall, 55 Front Street West). At 4:15 p.m., the Governor General will be onsite to engage with commuters and ask them to commit to a giving moment, and to dare their friends and families to give with them. The goal is to have as many people as possible accept the challenge and, in turn, encourage others to give.

About Dare2Give and My Giving Moment

Imagine if every Canadian challenged one other person to donate or volunteer along with them? Suddenly, there would be even more giving in Canada, and our communities would be that much better, stronger and caring. That''s the idea behind the Dare2Give challenge, the latest in the My Giving Moment campaign, inspired by Governor General David Johnston.

Anyone who dares others can go to to share how many people they''ve dared to give with them, and enter the draw. Dare2Give offers a new take on winning: instead of prizes going to individuals who participate, charities will be the beneficiaries.

While on the website, participants can browse for ideas on how to give and to find organizations to help them get involved. They can also commit to a giving moment, challenge others to commit, and share their ideas on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter by using the hashtag #DareYou.

The My Giving Moment campaign encourages Canadians to give back to their communities, neighbours, charities and causes. Leaders from the corporate, community and media sectors have come together to support the campaign, partnering with the Rideau Hall Foundation. They all share the Governor General''s commitment to giving as the key to creating a smarter, more caring Canada.
